I love wandering New York City before Christmas. Checking out the department store window displays and the ice skaters all over the city makes braving the cold worthwhile. But once the tree at Rockefeller comes down and the holiday displays start showcasing resort wear, New York can feel too frigid to explore.
Sometimes all it takes is a stop in a cozy café and a hot beverage to brave the elements so I was beyond excited to read the Gadling review about R Lounge. The short review recommends stopping by the hotel restaurant and lounge to get the best hot chocolate in New York City. The review made my smile just reading about what they had to offer:
In January, seasonal flavors include Frozen Hot Chocolate, Peppermint Hot Chocolate and Mocha Hot Chocolate served with peppermint meringue and chocolate ganache.
“This is it!” I thought. The perfect way to warm up in the Big Apple. So off I was to the Renaissance New York Times Square with one of my girlfriends in tow. It was a cold walk but I kept thinking of all the Grand Marnier, rum, Franjelico and Bailey’s I could add to my toasty beverage.
It was around 4 p.m. when I entered the lounge and as we arrived I noticed the view: floor-to-ceiling Times Square. It was neat to see but I don’t think the view is that special. The magic of Times Square is standing below at the street and taking in the sites, smells and sounds. The window between you and Times Square shields you from the manic energy and instead all you experience is gaudy flashing lights.
Never mind the view though. We were there for hot chocolate! This is when tragedy struck. We were informed they would not be serving hot chocolate “right now.”
What? What, R Lounge? It’s 20 degrees out and you’re in a touristy hotel and you’re not offering hot chocolate “right now”? Visions of homemade marshmallows, peppermint bark and chocolate shavings flashed before my eyes.
Sad face, R Lounge. Sad face, Gadling.
